Our Story


After a long career in the insurance industry, Wendy was ready for a change.

She had successfully built an expansive network as well as a significant book of clients from scratch, and had risen to the position of CEO of her firm. For almost two decades, Wendy enjoyed helping clients to mitigate risk and enjoyed a hard-earned reputation as a trusted advisor within the business community of the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area. After 18 years of constantly battling with insurance companies on behalf of her clients, she became burned out and decided to pivot professionally and pursue a more meaningful career path.​

StrategyHorse was initially conceived as a business development strategy consultancy, focused on professional services firms that were struggling with growth. Wendy decided to apply the business development tactics she had shared for so many years with clients, friends, and colleagues to boost the strategic growth of law firms, accounting firms, and engineering firms. As professional firms were struggling with the "sales allergies" of their team members, Wendy was able to craft consulting, educational, and coaching programs designed to deliver coveted rainmaking skills and the basic tenets of leadership. ​

Upon observing the unique challenges facing her law firm clients, Wendy decided to focus on working with small to midsized law firms and their attorneys. Wendy's value to her clients stems from what she refers to as her "street MBA", a formidable combination of transformative experiences stemming from her own struggles with Imposter Syndrome, Professional Stockholm Syndrome, seemingly impossible leadership hurdles, the battle scars of entrepreneurship, and trying to balance a busy work life with the demanding role of being a mom. She aspires to always try to turn challenges into opportunities, and StrategyHorse has been an effective catalyst for much-needed change in the legal space.

For over 15 years, Wendy Merrill has been committed to helping lawyers and law firms enhance profitability and secure long-term sustainability. She has inspired thousands of attorneys and firms around the world, providing practical guidance and proven techniques designed to make law better. Known for her high energy and relatable style, she is a frequent speaker and facilitator for bar associations, legal professional organizations, The Association of Legal Administrators (ALA), and regional and local law firms. In addition to her consulting and coaching practice, Wendy is a published author, columnist, and popular influencer on LinkedIn. ​In addition to 30 years of business development experience, Wendy has also worn the hats of Founder, CEO, CMO, Partner, and Executive Vice President of an international bar association. ​The road to establishing StrategyHorse was fraught with various personal and professional challenges. These experiences defined Wendy's pragmatic approach to addressing the obstacles encountered by high-performing attorneys and their firms, and fueled her passion to improve the lives of her clients. ​A native of Greater Washington, D.C., Wendy now resides north of Baltimore, Maryland, with her husband and three children. When not working or spending time with her family, you will find her at the barn with her retired racehorse, Allora.
